Adolf Hitler's Germany. Leipzig, spring, 1938. A young couple, (in fact my parents) Waldo and Dora, buy a vineyard cottage not far from town, not having a premonition that this little spot will become their life raft for many years. One year later the war breaks out and Waldo is drafted.
Everybody is making choices that will affect their future in Hitler's Germany. Dora’s brother joins the Waffen SS, her girlfriend is taking care of a Jewish family, Waldo’s parents keep his sister concealed because she is mentally ill.
After repeated disastrous air raids on Leipzig, Dora flees to the loneliness of the vineyard cottage where she gets to know Julien, a French prisoner of war. She spends eight weeks with him having a torrid love affair. Then the war is over and Julien returns to his native country. When Dora comes back from saying good-bye at the railway station, her own husband is standing at the top of the path up the hill. And she knows that she is pregnant...
“The Way up the Hill” works very attractively and excitingly off the Nazi past which is made clear by the dramatic love story.
(Simon, Berlin, in 2004)
“This novel promises illuminating insights in the tension field between personal tragedy and contemporary history.“
(Dumont, 2004)
